What Is Certification?

Certification is formal recognition by ASQ that an individual has demonstrated a proficiency within and a comprehension of a specified Body of Knowledge at a point in time. It is peer recognition and not registration or licensure.

  • Quality Engineer Certification
    Designed for those who understand the principles of product and service quality evaluation and control.
  • Quality Auditor Certification
    Designed for those who understand the standards and principles of auditing and the auditing techniques of examining, questioning, evaluating, and reporting to determine quality systems adequacy.
  • Reliability Engineer Certification
    Designed for those who understand the principles of performance evaluation and prediction to improve product/systems safety, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Quality Technician Certification
    Designed for those who can analyze quality problems, prepare inspection plans and instruction, select sampling plan applications, and apply fundamental statistical methods for process control.
  • Quality Inspector Certification
    Designed for those who, under professional direction, can evaluate hardware documentation, perform laboratory procedures, inspect products, measure process performance, record data, and prepare formal reports.
  • Manager of Quality/ Organizational Excellence Certification
    Designed for those who understand quality principles and standards in relation to organization and human resource management.
  • Software Quality Engineer Certification
    Designed for those who have a comprehensive understanding of software quality development and implementation; have a thorough understanding of software inspection and testing, verification, and validation; and can implement software development and maintenance processes and methods.
  • Quality Improvement Associate Certification 
    Designed for  individuals who are involved in quality improvement projects and require a basic knowledge of quality tools but are not necessarily employed in a traditional quality area.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt Certification 
    Designed for individuals that are actively involved in six sigma improvement projects.  The applicant must have a thorough comprehension of the six sigma black belt Body of Knowledge.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certification 
    Designed for individuals that are actively involved in six sigma improvement projects.  The applicant must have a fundamental comprehension of the six sigma green belt Body of Knowledge.
  • Calibration Technician Certification 
    Designed for  individuals who test, calibrate, maintain, and repair measuring instruments and equipment.
  • Process Analyst Certification 
    Designed for individuals who analyze and solve quality problems and are involved in quality improvement projects.

What Requirement Must be Fulfilled Before Applying?

If you have completed a degree, diploma, or certificate program beyond high school, a portion of the required experience may be waived.

Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) 
Requires that you have at least 10 years of work experience in one or more areas of the Body of Knowledge. This includes at least five years in a decision making technical, professional, or managerial position.

Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
Certified Quality Auditor (CQA)
Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE)

These programs all require that you have at least eight years of work experience in one or more areas of the Body of Knowledge for that particular exam. This includes at least three years in a decision making technical, professional, or management position.

Certified Quality Technician (CQT)
Requires that you have at least four years of work experience in one or more areas of the CQT Body of Knowledge.

Certified Quality Inspector (CQI)
Requires that you have at least two years of work experience in one or more areas of the CMI Body of Knowledge. If you do not have a high school diploma, you must have an additional three years of experience.

Certified Quality Process Analyst (CQPA)
Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA)
These programs require two years of general work experience or an associate's degree (or higher).

Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)
Requires two completed projects with signed affidavits or one project with a signed affidavit and three years of work experience, as it pertains to the CSSBB Body of Knowledge.  There is no education waiver.

Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB)
Requires three years of work experience within the CSSGB Body of Knowledge.

Certified Calibration Technician (CCT)
-Requires that you have five years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CCT Body of Knowledge.


Exam Format

All examinations consist of multiple choice questions that are carefully designed, reviewed for correctness, and computer scored and analyzed to properly determine the degree of comprehension of the prescribed Body of Knowledge. The Certified Manager of Quality exam also contains 2 constructed-response (essay) questions. All exams are given in the English language only.

Exam Dates

The CRE, CQT, CQI, CSSBB and CMQ/OE examinations are given each March and October. The CQE, CSQE, CQIA, CCT, CQPA, CQA, and CSSGB  examinations are given each June and December. The application deadlines are approximately 45 days before the examination dates. Specific examination dates are listed on the application. All certification testing is administered through ASQ headquarters, with test sites in local ASQ Sections.

Foreign Applications

If you live in a country other than the United States, Canada, or Mexico, the certification examinations are administered by foreign certification affiliates.
